In a nut shell, managed hosting is a service through which your hosting provider would look after all aspects of your web server, or your part of a web server. Unmanaged hosting is where you’re still provided with the service of hosting, but it would be down to you as the customer to manage everything. For example, this could include data migration, managing firewalls, backing up data regularly, renewing SSL certificates, updating PHP and a lot more. Whilst this could potentially sound daunting, some businesses prefer it this way for their own reasons and there’s nothing wrong with unmanaged hosting, considering their needs, time or skill level in-house.
